Wikipedia Integration
Overview
When tagging your website with structured data, it’s not just about describing what’s on the page—it’s also about linking it to trusted external sources that validate your content. That’s where referencing unambiguous entities, like Wikipedia, comes in.
This feature in Milestone Schema Manager lets you add authoritative references to your schema types using the “Same As” or “Additional Type” properties. Doing so can increase the trustworthiness of your schema and may positively influence how your content appears in search features like the Google Knowledge Graph.
Why Use Wikipedia References in Schema?
Search engines rely on structured data to understand and verify what your content is about. By linking your schema to a known entity—like a verified Wikipedia page—you:
- Boost the credibility of your data
- Help search engines confidently connect your content to real-world concepts
- Improve your chances of being featured in rich results or knowledge panels
Step-by-Step: Referencing Wikipedia in Schema
Let’s walk through the process using the Organization schema as an example.
Start with an Organization Schema
Assume you’re tagging your website using the Organization schema type. You want to include a reference to your company’s Wikipedia page to clearly define its identity.
Click on ‘Add Properties’ inside the schema editor.
Choose either:
- Same As (for identity verification)
- Additional Type (to indicate other relevant types or roles)
Then click on ‘Refer Wikipedia’ next to the selected property.
Search for Your Organization
In the pop-up that appears:
- Enter your organization name
- Click ‘Start’
The tool will now search Wikipedia for the most relevant matches.
Select the Correct Wikipedia Page
A list of matching Wikipedia entries will be displayed. Choose the one that accurately represents your organization. Click ‘Click here’ to preview the Wikipedia page in a new browser tab. If it’s correct, return to the schema editor and click ‘Save’.
Wikipedia Reference Is Added
Once saved, the selected Wikipedia URL will automatically be added as the value for Same As (or Additional Type, depending on what you chose). This creates a verified link between your schema and a trusted online entity.
Glossary of Terms
Term | Definition |
---|---|

Additional Type | A property to indicate another classification or subtype related to your content. |
Wikipedia Entity | A public, authoritative page on Wikipedia that represents a real-world concept or organization. |
Refer Wikipedia | A feature in the schema editor that helps you search and link to the correct Wikipedia page. |

Tips for Success
- Choose the Most Specific Match
If multiple Wikipedia entries appear, pick the one most relevant to your business or content focus.
- Don’t Skip Verification
Always preview the Wikipedia page before saving to make sure it’s correct and not a similarly named entity.
- Use for Organizations, People, Products
This feature works well with schemas like:
- Organization
- Person
- Product
- Event
Anywhere identity matters, a Wikipedia reference can add value.
- Keep It Updated
If your organization changes names or if the Wikipedia page is updated, remember to revisit your schema and revalidate it.
